CANINE HEARTWORM DISEASE
Heartworm disease is a serious condition that is found throughout most of Australia including all coastal areas. It is spread from dog to dog via mosquitoes, so pets do not need close contact with other dogs to become infected. A single bite from a carrier mosquito can introduce larvae into the dog's body. These eventually grow into adult worms in the heart and adjacent blood vessels, causing progressive heart failure and death.
Unfortunately there are often no symptoms until the disease is well advanced, and treatment is expensive and not always successful.
Nowadays we are fortunate to have available to us a good range of heartworm prevention products. These should be started in young puppies and given for life. Products fall roughly into three categories:
1. Daily tablets and syrups
Daily dosing can be tedious
Even a few missed doses can lead to failure
2. Monthly tablets or chewables
Very convenient
Most dogs will eat chewables as treats
3. Annual injection
Can be given at the same time as yearly booster
Can be given from 6 months of age
There are also products available which combine heartworm prevention with flea control and intestinal worming. These are usually given monthly.
The choice of heartworm control products is increasing as time goes by – we can advise you as to which one best suits your pet's needs, your lifestyle, and your budget.
