FEEDING YOUR PET

When asked “what should we feed our dog or cat?” the simple answer always given is a good/premium quality dry food, raw meaty bones and provide 24 hour access to water.

Raw meaty bones are natures toothbrush for pets. When fed regularly the teeth and gums are cleaned and exercised naturally, thereby preventing the need for scaling, polishing and extraction of teeth in your pet. Raw meaty bones should be introduced into your pet's diet from the age of 12 weeks. For cats a whole chicken wing is ideal, and we recommend that one is fed 2-3 times weekly. Chicken wings are also ideal for toy and miniature dogs. Chicken necks are nutritionally sound, however even the smallest of dogs chomp and swallow necks, with very little chewing, providing minimal gum and teeth cleaning.

Large dogs can be fed raw meaty lamb or beef bones and whole chicken frames, readily available from butchers and supermarkets.

Our staffies Sandy and Chyna weigh 17kg and 23kg respectively. They are exercised regularly. Throughout their adult life they have been fed either Hill's canine adult or Hill's canine light food on a daily basis. They are fed 120gm and 180gm each per day. As you can see from the photos, Chyna is a notorious food thief. Her mother Sandy fortunately tolerates this behaviour. An 18kg bag lasts 60 feeding days or less than $2 a day for both dogs (70c and $1.30 each). Two or three nights a week raw meaty bones are fed in lieu of dry food.
