HEALTH CARE FOR NEW PUPPY AND KITTEN

Vaccination
Puppies: against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and kennel cough at 6-8 weeks and 12-14 weeks and thereafter annually.
Kittens: against feline enteritis and cat flu at 8 weeks and 12 weeks and thereafter annually. Kittens can also be vaccinated against feline leukemia and chlamydia if needed.

Worming
Puppies and Kittens: Should be wormed for gastrointestinal parasites with an allwormer such as DRONTAL, PARAGARD or FELEX PASTE every 2 weeks from 3-4 weeks of age until 12 weeks of age and then every 3 months.

Heartworm
Puppies should start on heartworm prevention by 12weeks of age and continue it for life. Products available include daily tablets (e.g. DIMMITROL), monthly chewable cubes (e.g. HEARTGARD PLUS), combination heartworm/flea control products (e.g. ADVOCATE and REVOLUTION) and annual injection from 6-9months of age (PROHEART SR-12).

Flea Control
We recommend using FRONTLINE spray, FRONTLINE PLUS TOP SPOT or ADVANTAGE for flea control in dogs and cats of all ages. COMFORTIS (monthly chewable tablets) are also recommended for dogs. Frontline spray can be used from 2 days of age, Advantage from 8 weeks, and comfortis from 14 weeks. The combo products Advocate and Revolution also control fleas.

Tick Control
For puppies and kittens under 12 weeks of age, spraying every 3 weeks with FRONTLINE spray will help control paralysis ticks. For pups over 8 weeks FRONTLINE TOP SPOT and ADVANTIX can be used every 2 weeks instead. Other tick control products are PROBAN tablets for dogs over 12 weeks given on alternate days through the tick season, and 6 weekly TICK COLLARS for dogs over 12 weeks. DAILY SEARCHING is essential in combination with use of any of these products.
